Which Type of Water is The Healthiest?
Most of us think that our water is clean and healthy, but is it?
We know staying hydrated is crucial for health. But it can be challenging to know what is actually in the water we drink, and which type of water to choose, isn’t it.
Over the years I have read several books and articles about water. I always wanted to make sure I was drinking the best possible water in the most convenient way and share what I learned with my customers and clients.
And during my search over the last 8 years for the best water, I have tried distilling my water, filtering my water and harvesting/buying my own spring water.
This is what I found: a huge amount of disinformation, as well as some amazing truths. Let’s talk about the three top water myths so I can help you avoid them and find the best water for your health today.
1: TAP WATER IS PERFECTLY HEALTHY TO DRINK
Tap water is treated in large facilities so it doesn’t make us sick. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that it is a healthy choice. The reason behind this is that tap water is deemed clean based on standards and regulations. For example, the water can contain a certain level of toilet paper, heavy metals and other contaminants and still be considered “clean”.
If you really study the literature surrounding tap water pollutants, you may see tap water in a completely different light! Here is some information about the quality of tap water in the United States.
What are the legal limits of contaminants in tap water in your area, and do they really protect your health? In a recent international study, 83% of samples from around the world were found to be contaminated by plastic particles linked to reproductive and developmental toxicity. That means consuming tap water could put you at risk of infertility and it could affect your baby while pregnant or nursing. Those are just a few of the known effects of one contaminant.
Some of the most common pollutants in tap water include pesticides, fertilizers, pharmaceutical compounds like lithium from antidepressants, toxic metals like lead and arsenic, bacteria and viruses. Other pollutants in tap water that aren’t even being measured include atrazine, which is thought to contribute to the development of cancer; barium, which can harm the kidneys, heart and blood vessels, and many others.
Then it travels from the plant to your tap through pipes that can contaminate it further…
So is tap water perfectly fine to drink? Even more, WATCH THE WATER.
2: DISTILLED WATER PULLS MINERALS OUT OF YOUR FOOD & BODY
There are some interesting myths online about pure, distilled water pulling minerals from your food, or weakening your teeth.
This is often based on the fact that distilled water doesn’t contain minerals. However, the truth is that even mineral water has a very few minerals in it. You couldn’t depend on it as a dietary mineral source. But real food and supplements, luckily, can supply all the nutrients your body could ever need.
What’s more, mineral water is often packaged in (heated) plastic containers, which we already know isn’t the optimal for health thanks to research performed on the topic.
And when it comes to teeth, the idea that distilled water weakens your teeth could be based on the fact that many governments add fluoride to tap water, despite research showing that fluoride can be damaging to health. My question is this: if we know that fluoride is toxic, why are we consuming it at all? There are healthy ways to strengthen your teeth.
3: ALKALINE WATER ISN’T HEALTHY EITHER
This is certainly a myth. If you ask some of the most prominent health experts in the world, they will tell you that although extensive study hasn’t proven the benefits of alkaline water, they still recommend it. However, there are different types of alkaline water.
Some alkaline water is essential tap water with baking soda added to it to make it alkaline.
